2011 Clash of the Trading Forums: Still Another Prize Added

Thanks to local card shop and new league sponsor, Games and Cards (see shop pics here), the Clash of the Trading Forums Fantasy Baseball League on Yahoo now has another prize added to the prize pool. It’s a box of 2004 “Yak Pak” cards, which is basically repacked baseball cards from various brands and years. This box contains 24 packs with 7 cards per pack. With some luck, an autograph card might be pulled too.

2010 Clash of the Trading Forums Prizes!

New Clash of the Trading Forums banner

No, the ’2010′ in the title above is not a typo. It’s just taken me this long to round up the entry fees (a $25 bv card from any sport) from last year’s COTTF team managers–my bad. And truth be told, I still haven’t been able to secure one 2010 COTTF team manager’s entry fee. But thanks to Joe (owner of HobbyKings.com and team manager of last year’s C’MON SON! team), we do now have 11 cards in the prize pool (remember that one 2010 team manager, AtlantaSportsCards, provided a $100 gift certificate rather than a $25 card to the prize pool). Joe was nice enough to send two different $25 bv UD Bill Walton autos even thought he was unable to join this year’s Clash of the Trading Forums fantasy baseball league on Yahoo. Hopefully Joe will be able to join us again next year.

There’s also another little wrinkle about the 2010 prize pool. Two of last year’s COTTF team managers sent last year’s and this year’s entry fees together in their same respective envelopes (see #2 and #10 in the list below). What I will do is initially put both entry fees from both managers into the 2010 prize pool but when one of those manager’s cards is chosen, the other card will be removed from the 2010 prize pool and placed in the 2011 prize pool. Thus only one of the cards listed in both #2 and #10 will be awarded here and the other listed in #2 and #10 will go into the 2011 prize pool. Here is the initial list of 13 cards in the 2010 prize pool:

  1. 2009 Upper Deck Ballpark Collection Jersey Autographs #JA-ZG Zack Greinke
  2. 2007 UD Exquisite Collection Rookie Signatures Reflections Autographs #REF-HG Rich Hill/Sean Gallagher #’d/40 or 2005 UD SP Reflections Dual Sigs Blue #JVMG Jose Vidro/Marcus Giles #’d/35
  3. 2003 Donruss Signature Legends of Summer Autographs Century #LS-7 Bob Feller #’d/100
  4. 2008 Stadium Club #162 Justin Masterson Auto BV
  5. 2007 UD Premier Patches Dual #VG Vladimire Guerrero #’d /75
  6. 2010 Bowman Stephen #BP1 Stephen Strasburg
  7. 2002-03 UD Honor Roll Triple Warm-ups #TM/KB/JR Tracy McGrady/Kobe Bryant/Jason Richardson
  8. 2010 UD Ultimate Collection All-Time Team Signatures #AT-BW Bill Walton #’d /25
  9. 2010 UD Ultimate Collection Personal Touch – Movie #M-BW Bill Walton #’d /25
  10. 2009 Press Pass Eclipse Solar Swatches #SSKH2 Kevin Harvick #’d /299 or 2009 Press Pass Eclipse Solar Swatches #SSCE4 Carl Edwards #’d /299
  11. 2008 Playoff Prestige Prestigious Picks Red #10 #’d /250 Matt Ryan GU

Each card in the list above has been scanned exactly the way it was received–still in its holder (which will result in the actual card being a bit out of focus). I have not removed the cards from their holders. Click images to enlarge:

2nd Place – Harner’s Heroes: Choice of two cards
3rd Place – AtlantaSportsCards: Choice of two cards
4th Place – Forum of Dreams: Choice of one card
5th Place – team name here: Choice of one card
6th Place – Showdown: Choice of one card
7th Place – Stinking Badges: Choice of one card
8th Place – Dirty Sanchez: The last remaining card

In order to ensure that the winners choose in an orderly fashion and to minimize misunderstandings, I will notify each winner in order and after the previous winner has chosen their card(s). After receiving prize notification from me, winners can simply post their choice of card(s) in this post’s comment section below. I still have the original mailers that the cards arrived in, so I will use these to confirm mailing addresses.

2011 Clash of the Trading Forums: Another Prize

One recent day while wandering the gigantic Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, I ran across these cool vintage-themed baseball items. I chatted up the booth owner (David, a talented artisan of handcrafted gifts with a vintage design) and learned that he makes a nice variety of vintage-themed items. These items include vintage baseball drink coasters, retro Bingo card drink coasters, vintage holiday coasters and other assorted coasters with vintage themes. These items can be purchased online at www.cheltenhamroad.etsy.com. David also has his own website, www.cheltenhamroad.com.

David was also generous in donating a set of vintage-themed baseball magnets for the Clash of the Trading Forums fantasy baseball league prize pool. These magnets are an homage to the famous 1909-1911 T206 baseball cards and feature three old-time Chicago Cubs–Ed Reulbach, Johnny Evers and Frank Chance.

Vintage Baseball Magnets - Chicago Cubs

The magnets measure about 2 7/16 inches on each side. Other vintage three-player teams set magnets are available (including the Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers) at David’s booth along with magnets featuring other retro themes.

In the near future, I’ll compile a “checklist” of all of the teams/players available. I’d imagine many aficionados of T206 cards would want to learn more about these magnets and associated drink coasters.

Andy Stadium thanks David for his donation and looks forward to featuring David’s future creations here on the blog. If you like more information about David’s handcrafted goods, you can email me (email link in the right sidebar) or check out David’s webpages linked above.

Announcing the Official Song of Andy Stadium: Aah, Baseball!

Aah, Baseball: Part 1

Baseball is back and I’m loving it! One of the things I do when I’m not blogging or watching baseball is volunteer work for a small Southern California-area nonprofit group called ‘Golden Generation‘. We arrange for established and up-and-coming singers/musicians to perform at convalescent homes, senior citizen centers, etc. Recently we had the pleasure of arranging for songwriter Harriet Schock (she wrote the Grammy-nominated Helen Reddy hit Ain’t No Way to Treat a Lady) and backup singer Andrea Ross-Greene to perform. They did a wonderful show for the senior citizens and afterwards I went surfing the web to learn more about them.

As it turns out, Andrea  recently wrote a fresh new song for baseball fans–about baseball fans! It’s called “Aah, Baseball!” from her new CD Forever Again and it’s a real day-brightener! It has an easy-listening energy similar to Terry Cashman’s 1981 hit “Talkin’ Baseball” but yet it’s much different and stands on its own. This song deserves to be played at major league, minor league, and Little League ballparks. I could even see MLB using it in various promotional campaigns. Give it a listen and you’ll see what I mean…

Find more artists like Andrea Ross-Greene at Myspace Music

I’m such a big fan of this song that I proclaim ‘Aah, Baseball!‘ to be the (drumroll please) Official Song of Andy Stadium. In the near future, look for Part 2 as I write more about Andrea Ross-Greene and her connection with baseball.

2011 Clash of the Trading Forums

Fantasy baseball is in the air and now taking signups on various websites. I will be running a new and improved ‘Clash of the Trading Forums’ fantasy baseball league again this year. All of last year’s managers are invited back but there may be some new managers this year.

For those who aren’t familiar with ‘Clash of the Trading Forums’ (COTTF) fantasy baseball, it’s a 12-team head-to-head league I run on Yahoo. The team managers may be:

  • Staffers (forum owners, admins, mods) from various sportscard trading forums
  • Owners/management from various sportscard dealers (many have online trading forums)
  • Owners/staff from various sportscard publications (some have online trading forums)
  • Staffers from sportscard manufacturers

My mission for this year’s COTTF  league is to improve the prize pool. Thus I am in the process of visiting some local card shops to sponsor COTTF and donate prizes. And I’m happy to report that I was able to secure COTTF’s first 2011 sponsor and a prize–a factory-sealed box of 1994 Score Select Baseball Series 1 (24 packs, 12 cards per pack) courtesy of Hall of Fame Baseball Cards.

One of the prizes offered by Clash of the Trading Forums fantasy baseball

Hall of Fame Baseball Cards is located at 319 E. Foothill Blvd, Arcadia, California 91006 (phone 626-358-”A-HIT”). The owner is a really great guy with a great store. In fact, I took lots of pictures of the store and posted them in this previous AndyStadium blog entry.

More COTTF prizes will be posted as I receive them. I’ve given each of last year’s managers first shot at a manager spot for 2011. Invites for new team managers will be sent if there are any vacancies. All COTTF team managers will again need to send a $25 bv card (any sport) for their league entry fee (to be added to the prize pool). League settings will likely stay the same as last year with the draft tentatively scheduled for March 20. More updates to come (including tying up loose ends from last season)…

Charity Auction Online: Autographed Dodger Photos!

I had attended Author Night featuring Dodger historian Mark Langill on February 17 at the South Pasadena Public Library (and blogged about it here). Now I’ve received this nice message from the South Pasadena Public Library that I’d like to share:

Friends of the Library’s Auction of Autographed Dodger Photos

Before Mark Langill’s highly successful Author Night appearance at the South Pasadena Public Library on February 17, he presented three 12” X 18” personally autographed photographs to be auctioned off as a fundraiser for the Friends of the South Pasadena Library. The auction items are:

  1. Autographed photo of Dodger Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, taken in the press box at Dodger Stadium while Scully was filming the television postgame show.
  2. Autographed photo of Hall of Fame outfielder Duke Snider, in his familiar batting stance and wearing his Brooklyn Dodger uniform.
  3. Photo from the original negative of the Dodgers clinching the National League pennant at Dodger Stadium on October 2, 1965. A joyous Sandy Koufax is about to be greeted by third baseman John Kennedy while first baseman Wes Parker in the background begins to celebrate. The photo is autographed by Parker and former Dodger outfielder Lou Johnson, who would hit the winning home run in the decisive World Series Game 7 at Minnesota to give the Dodgers a championship.

The Friends of the South Pasadena Library are a non-profit support group of the South Pasadena Library. The minimum bid for each poster-sized photo is only $75. Bids are being accepted by email only and must be received before midnight on March 31, 2011.

Bids can be individually placed by emailing to dodgerposters@yahoo.com. Each glossy photograph is neatly autographed with a broad-tipped pen. The photos should be referred to as (1) Scully, (2) Snider, and/or (3) Parker & Johnson. Please include your name, daytime phone number, email address, and your bid(s) for one or more posters.

Winning bidders will be notified around April 1, 2011 and will have 1 week to pay for their poster(s). Winners will be able to pick up their poster(s) at the South Pasadena Library or arrange for mail order delivery for a nominal fee. A Letter of Authenticity is provided with every poster. Obviously, a large format photograph signed by a Los Angeles Dodgers luminary would make a unique and valuable gift for any true fan.

I also learned that the auctions are basically of a blind/silent type where bidders can’t see what others have bid. Here are the pictures (excuse the watermarks):

Blogospheric Entry: Cool Contest at Crinkly Wrappers

I just love Topps baseball cards. And so when I discovered this cool baseball card blog (http://crinklywrappers.blogspot.com/) running this cool contest (join now!), I had to get in on it. Hopefully, you can too if the deadline hasn’t passed already (sometime Monday Feb. 21  when Crinkly Wrappers posts his “Random Pack Monday’ post). It’s easy to enter (visit his blog for details) and the prizes are out of this world. Three winners will receive a “one of each year full run of 1952 to 2011 original Topps cards”. How cool and generous is that?  Gotta give a big thumbs up to Crinkled Wrappers. They just got another follower.

Local Card Shop: Hall of Fame Baseball Cards

I found this cool card shop on the web, Hall of Fame Baseball Cards, and saw it that it was a brick-and-mortar shop that wasn’t too far from me (it’s at 319 East Foothill Blvd, Arcadia, near 2nd St.). It had been raining here in the Los Angeles are but in between rainstorms, I figured I’d go check out the shop, pick up a pack of 2011 Topps Series 1 and take a few pictures.

Author! Author!: Dodgers Team Historian

Despite the local backlash aimed at LA Dodgers ownership, it’s nice to know that there are still some very cool and nice people in the Dodgers front office. Dodgers team historian and publications editor Mark Langill is one of them and he spoke Thursday evening (Feb. 17) at the South Pasadena Public Library as part of the library’s “Author Night” series. He shared lots of stories about growing up and playing Little League baseball in South Pasadena. He also shared stories about his experiences working for the Dodgers. Some of the stories are included in Mr. Langill’s book, “Game of My Life Dodgers: Memorable Stories of Dodgers Baseball”.

Dodgers Historian Mark Langill spoke at South Pasadena Public Library 2/17/11

The event was well-attended (roughly 100 people in attendance) and everyone enjoyed hearing entertaining stories about Jackie Robinson, Tommy Lasorda, Walter O’Malley, Carl Erskine, “Sweet” Lou Johnson, Wes Parker, Roy Gleason and Vin Scully, among others. Some of the attendees are significant figures in Mr. Langill’s life. Seated in the audience was Mr. Langill’s mother, Little League coach, first-grade teacher, and even his optometrist!

As an extra added bonus, Mr. Langill also brought lots of Dodgers memorabilia door prizes. Prizes included bobbleheads, souvenir fleece blankets, autographed baseballs and autographed pictures. All attendees received a free “Dodgers Magazine” which had a number stickered onto the back. Those numbers were used to determine some of the door prize winners. Other door prizes were awarded to attendees who correctly answered Dodger trivia questions from Mr. Langill. I didn’t win but at least I didn’t end up completely empty-handed.

As luck would have it, a fellow blogger whom I recognized was also there–Linda of MLB Blogs’ LEAVes of Dodger Blue. I got to meet her for the first time and she was very nice!

After the program, attendees also got an opportunity to purchase Mr. Langill’s book and have it signed. A large number of people bought the book (including me and had it signed.

Mr. Langill was extremely nice and gave everyone who bought a book an extra Dodger memento: a souvenir Vin Scully pin from 1999 (honoring Vin’s 50th season). Thank you!

I also want to thank the South Pasadena Public Library staff for making this event possible. They even provided free peanuts, Cracker Jack, cookies, lemonade and bottled water–thank you!
